Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli: a jewel of the Venetian Renaissance

It is impossible not to be enchanted by this truly unique church. Just seein it from the outside, it is clear from the start, howthe architecture ecapsulates all the balance and elegance typical of the Renaissance. Its multi-coloured marble and its harmonous designs make it stand out like a pearl enveloped in the square Campo dei Miracoli.

Built between 1481 and 1489, it is the work of a single artist: Pietro Lombardo who with his team of craftsmen took on the whole task; from the design to the construction as wells as the decorations.

Even the beautiful statues of saints inside are by Lombardy, standing in the nave, which is richly decorated with finely worked marble. Morever, it is precisely the wise use of marble that gives this church its unique character, especially on the raised altar which is filled with light and truly evocative.

Palazzo Grimani (Castle)

Palazzo Grimani di Santa Maria Formosa is a State museum, located in Venice in the Castello district, near the Campo di Santa Maria Formosa. It can be reached on land from Ruga Giuffa and by water from the San Severo canal, much used in times gone by.

A particularly precious pearl owing to the originality of its architecture, its decorations and the circumstances surrounding its construction. A Roman and Florentine “mansion” in an original palace with a colonnaded courtyard, inspired by classical architectural models.

Palazzo Grimani is a jewelof the Renaissance that would often be praised by travelers, tourists and diplomats. For today’s visitors, after almost thirty years of restoration. it is a museum in and of itself. A treasure trove, richly decorated with stuccos and frescoes created by artists such as Giovanni da Udine, Federico Zuccari, Camillo Mantovano, Francesco Salviati.

The Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo

The Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo is certainly one of the most beautiful and impressive churches in Venice. Its construction started in 1234 for the Preachers of the Dominicans. It is located in the Castello district, and is considered the Pantheon of Venice due to the large number of Venetian doges and other important figures who were buried there.

Indeed, on its facade you can see some sarcophagi, including that of the Doge Jacopo Tiepolo who in 1234 donated the land to the monks in order to build the church.

The Gothic style interior of the church is home to remarkable works of art as well as many funeral monuments of Doges and other illustrious figures from Venetian history.

Church of San Zaccaria

An important monastic church, San Zaccaria was the most important female religious institution in Venice, closely linked to the doge and the nobility of the city. There had been a Church of San Zaccaria in existence since the 9th century but in 1458 the decision was made to build a new one alongside the original one. The bell tower, however, dates back to 117 as it was rebuilt following a great fire that had destroyed the whole area. The façade is the work of a succession of numerous architects, the first of which, Antonio Gambello, is creditied with the design of the intital layout. The current facade was subsequently erected and it now dominates the square spectacularly.

Ancient tradition has it that the Corno Ducale, a kind of crown, was originally presented to the doge by the abbess of the convent in 864 , This went on to be worn by the doges of Venice ever since.

Palazzo Querini-Stampalia

This is simply one of the most fascinating Venetian palaces built since 1528 by the Querini family.

Donated to the city by Count Giovanni Querini in 1868, today it houses the eponymous Foundation that celebrates a happy union of past, present and future: ancient, modern and contemporary art, architecture, can be appreciated in the eighteenth century rooms and in the library and exhibition spaces designed by Carlo Scarpa and Mario botta.
